Classics to watch every year :
Four Christmases. A Christmas Story. Love Actually.
Scrooged. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
Just Friends. Krampus. Home Alone. Die Hard.
The original Charlie Brown / Grinch cartoons.
And the movies I really don’t need to see again:
Home Alone 2 (or the other ones in the series after the 1st)
Elf – I just don’t think it’s that funny. Will Ferrell is way better when he isn’t trying to be loud and obnoxious. Try Everything Must Go or Stranger Than Fiction.
The Grinch (2018) – see prior rant. the Grinch (2000) – another Jim Carrey trying to be loud.
Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.
I struggle enough with Christmas season as it is but there are songs I don’t care to ever hear again:
Christmas Shoes – I mean come on. This song is nothing but emotional exploitation at its worst. It’s like putting Bambi’s mother getting shot on a loop. People already feel bad enough around the Christmas season that they don’t need someone actively trying to make them feel worse.
Wonderful Christmas time (includes all covers) – Just a horrible song with a terrible sound and no value.
Santa Baby – Specifically the Ariana Grande version. There’s a reason we don’t remake everything. Your auto tune did not add anything to the original. For that matter anything done by Ariana and Carly Rae Jepsen (I had to look up how to spell that).
The First 2 Mannheim Steamroller Christmas albums. I can’t hear it without having flashbacks to the early 90s. It must have been given away with every CD player purchase from 89 to 98.
There are good songs / albums too.
Pentatonix Christmas Albums -pretty much all of it.
Lindsey Stirling – Warmer in Winter
Sarah McLachlan – Wintersong is a fully underrated album, and I got it for my dad (who was huge fan of hers) just about a month before he was diagnosed.
RUN DMC – Christmas in Hollis
there are more, I’m sure.
It’s been long enough now (almost 2 weeks) that I can rationally talk about it.
The new Grinch movie is just not that good. The snow animation and some of the movement animations are phenomenal. The narration is flat and joyless. The story tries too hard to create unnecessary backstory for the Grinch. He doesn’t need some kind of explanation as to why he’s a jerk. can’t he just be a jerk?
Also, why does B.C. Do an American accent? Were they concerned that he would be too much of an outsider? The whole deal with the Grinch is that his otherness is what alienates him. Also he was way too nice, and has a perfect white smile, so his character design is flawed against the original song, which brings me to…
The music was just not good. I get that Tyler the Creator is “the hotness” is Hollywood these days but there was nothing new or clever or even interesting in the remake of the song.
Its a redbox-with-a-promo-code viewing. I’d recommend the original or even the Jim Carey version over it.
Monday night I had this crazy dream that I was standing out in the street and there was a meteor shower that was so bright and obvious that it was cartoonish. I woke up a little disappointed that it wasn’t real. Then Tuesday night there was a bright flash in the sky to the Northwest of my house and it was startlingly bright. Sort of a greenish grayish white light. I searched all over Twitter and news reports expecting to see something in the order of the “fireball over Russia” or something only to come up with figurative crickets. I searched again for meteor flash and came up with the fact that we are in the midst of the Gemenid meteor shower which is apparently one of the largest non-comet meteor showers and this year’s is predicted to be phenomenal. Too bad there’s so much cloud cover. At the peak (Dec 14) there’s expected to be 100 meteors per hour. Pretty cool. (Hey, look! I didn’t say anything disparaging about Christmas)
I probably shouldn’t have had the new Juniper Latte at 5pm because it’s after midnight and I am wide awake. Just like old times. I don’t think I’ve slept well in easily 6 months.
Speaking of 6 months, today was my 6 month review at my new job. I still miss a lot of the aspects of my old job. I should finally get back to what I was making at my old job except now there is room for upward mobility.
The Christmas infestation continues to worsen. It’s all over tv, music, print media… even the kids are against me and have decided to be in on it. Wake me up mid-January. Then it will just be cold and gloomy but the days will start getting longer again.
I am either the grinch, cold hearted and spiteful of Christmas in its entirety or I am Charlie Brown – sick of the commercialism and crass marketing nonsense. Between “we force our employees to work from 3pm until 1 am so you can save $3 on a USB cable!” And “Cyber Monday! Basically the same deals, 5% higher prices, and less employees getting actually paid!” I just can’t get behind the season.
I’m sick to death of all the emails trying to sell me crap I don’t need or want. It’s bad enough that the kids demand toys they see on YouTube videos even though they have little to no internet in the actual toy- they are just convinced that because someone baby talked at them while opening the toy that they need to have it. What ever happened to just watching GI Joe or He-Man and wanting to imaginatively play and have adventures?
I don’t want to hear any carols. I don’t want to go shopping. I do appreciate sugar free peppermint mocha creamer being available but I like that year round. You know it’s healthy when you buy it in November and it’s good until March.
Bah! Humbug. Wake me when December comes to an end.
I’ve always said that I would never go to Walmart on thanksgiving night and yet that’s where I ended up. Not because I wanted a new cheap, featureless tv that will break in a year, but because the boys came down with head lice and they were the only place open who sells the shampoo and combs. Ah the joys of parenting.
There was a huge stigma attached when I was a kid. There was only one girl who had lice each year and it always was labeled as “you get that when you’re a dirty poor kid”. Years later it’s more obvious that we were all dirty, poor kids.
My little guy probably picked it up at daycare.
After spending nearly two hours amongst some of the oddest characters this side of Mos Eisley Cantina I got home at midnight and as I pulled into the driveway I realized that I could have gone to Walgreens and avoided the whole mess.
Shouldn’t there be at least air-quotes around food?
Now you just have to question “Why on earth did you google McRib?”
Out of every memory of my “apartment years” one of the fondest of all was coming home from work and the smell of everyone’s dryer sheets pouring out with warm currents that flowed through the cool night air.
Shocking that it wasn’t my downstairs neighbor screaming at her kid every night for a few hours, “Michael! Go to bed!”
And the numbers I was most concerned about were in the other (political) arenas.
At least the Beavers are undefeated, but I said that Sunday morning about my Rams too. I guess as long as you have to lose, it might as well be to Brees slinging it like a boss.
